Ayda se souvient de la première fois qu’elle est montée sur des skis. « Je tombais tout le temps!» rit-elle. Téméraire, elle a poursuivi. « J’ai toujours voulu en faire mais je ne savais pas que l’on pouvait skier en plein centre-ville de Montréal», développe-t-elle.
C’est elle qui a poussé son mari, Iraj, à la suivre. Il profite de l’entrevue pour prendre une pause bien méritée. «On est samedi matin, on pourrait dormir et on est là, » rigole-t-il. « Mais j’aime ça, les gens sont très sympas et les instructeurs nous encouragent.»
Depuis son arrivée, le couple a découvert que la communauté iranienne était très présente à Montréal et apprécie la gentillesse des résidents. Ayda souligne avoir été très épaulée par les organismes d’aide aux nouveaux arrivants.
« C’est une ville très accueillante, les gens prennent soin les uns des autres, ajoute son mari. Même si la langue officielle est le français, on nous répond lorsque nous parlons en anglais. C’est une belle ville pour fonder une famille. Le climat est peut-être froid mais les gens sont chaleureux. »

Ayda remembers the first time she tried to ski: “I fell down every time!” But she kept at it.

Ayda invited her husband Iraj to come with her. Happy to take a break from skiing during the interview, he shares “When she asked me to come to ski with her I thought it’s Saturday morning and we could sleep longer, but in the end I liked it. People are really nice and the instructors are really encouraging.”
Since arriving, they have discovered that many people from the Iranian community were present in Montreal. Ayda highlights that many organisations offering services to newcomers helped them. “Montreal is a friendly city and people take care of each other,” Iraj adds, “Even if the majority of people speak French, they answer us when we ask something in English. Montréal is also a nice city to raise a family. I wouldn’t go to New York to do that. The weather might be cold but the people here are warm.”
